The Anechoic Chamber

Anechoic Test Facility
Part of the National Gas Turbine Establishment, the Anechoic Facility was the last major building to be constructed at Pyestock. This enormous blockhouse was erected in 1971 and featured a huge anechoic chamber, silenced exhaust chamber and associated control room.
The most striking feature of the Anechoic Chamber itself are the sound reflecting wedges of which there are nearly 7,000 covering the walls, ceiling and floor. Three individual wedges are mounted together on a base-frame to form each single unit 610mm square; these units are then arranged over the chamber surfaces so that each successive unit has its wedge peak edges at right angles to the neighbouring unit.
